Derren has only one effect in which he has used –what we in the trade call: “reversed mind reading”. That is where ideas are planted in somebodies head in a hypnotic state (highly unreliable because amnesia must stick otherwise the magic is gone for them, so test that the amnesia is sticking and quickly move into the process)

Other effects are somtimes based around pre-show forces (clever magic) and dual reality. Read Paul Brook’s The Gift if you wanna learn more about that style of mentalism.

It worked for me! Matt makes it look so easy. I think there are a lot of nuances to it. He seems very natural and relaxed at it and I think he’s been doing it for a while. I am a little more ackward so it took me a bit of practice! Funnymagicianman seems pretty adept and knowledgeable at hypnosis, I am sure he could give you some pointers on the finer points if you ask him.

Well, its not amnesia at all. its a pattern break at first, but when he starts talking to him, he plants the idea of him forgetting his name. i guess you could say that its confusion.

That was wicked! I just tried that on a friend. He went blank for about 5 seconds after I asked him his name. After 10 seconds I repeated the question and he then gave his name.

When I asked him about it, he said that he understood the question ‘Whats your name?’ and could remember his name at that time. But he was confused and that is why he didn’t answer.

My question is - did he really have amnesia and was rationalising what happened? Or was it just confusion, and not really amnesia?
